Epoxy coatings were first developed in the mid-1950s and are now the most widely used industrial and marine protective coatings. These are two-component coatings packaged in separate containers, resin and cure. There are literally hundreds of epoxy resins and hardeners available on the market. These materials are also used in other applications, such as adhesives and structural repair materials. There are also many combinations of bases and hardeners. The epoxies can be solvent-based, water-based or essentially solvent-free. They can also be used in powder coating. The epoxies have excellent adhesion, chemical resistance, water resistance and wet adhesion. They are sensitive to chalking and are normally coated with a UV-resistant coating in atmospheric service. The epoxy resins may be mixed with other resins or special pigments to modify the strength characteristics of the basic epoxy:
- Mixing with acrylic resin increases UV resistance
- Mixing with phenolic resin increases chemical resistance
- Adding glass flakes increases impact and wear resistance
- The addition of aluminum oxide or other irregularly shaped materials creates a non-slip material
THE CHOICE OF A COATING IS BASED ON NUMEROUS FACTORS WHICH INCLUDE:
- Lining service environment
- Indoor or Outdoor
- Immersion or atmosphere
- Chemical products
- Operating temperature
- Substrate to be covered
- Size and configuration of the part to be covered
- Preparation of the surface available and possible on site
- Application temperature and humidity
- Life expectancy of the parts to be coated
- Availability of application equipment
- Availability of coating materials
- Level of comfort of the owner with the products and the manufacturer
- Budget
